Nebraska Golden Sower Award

Winners announced

April 17, 2008

Every year, the Wakefield students vote for their favorite book to receive the Nebraska Golden Sower Award.  They choose from 10 books nominated by teachers, librarians and students in each category: K-3, 4-6 and young adult.  In order to vote, students must read or hear at least 4 nominees.  Our student votes, along with others across Nebraska, will help determine the winner.

Students in grades K-3 had the Golden Sower nominees read to them during their library skills classes.  118 students participated in the voting.  Their favorite book was Mrs. McBloom, Clean Up Your Classroom! by Kelly DiPucchio.  Coming in 2nd was Sakes Alive! A Cattle Drive by Karma Wilson and I Wanna Iguana by Karen Kaufman Orloff was 3rd.

A total of 42 4th-6th graders gave their vote.  They either had the nominees read to them by their classroom teachers or read them on their own.  The SOS files by Betsy Byars and The World According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney tied for the most votes.  In a close 3rd was The Stupendous Dodgeball Fiasco by Janice Repka.

The young adult titles were also provided for the junior high and high school students to read.
