Seuss Celebration and IditaREAD in March

The Wakefield Library Media Center is sponsoring its annual Read Across America celebration during the week of Dr. Seuss's birthday, March 1-5, 2010. On March 2, Theodor Seuss Geisel would have been 106 years old. Dr. Seuss's books have made learning to read fun for children around the world.
Students will begin the week with the reading of the Reader's Promise in the elementary hallways. Seuss week celebrations will include celebrity readers in the Library, dress-up days, and a Seuss lunch menu on Tuesday with birthday cake.
Dress up days
Monday, March 1 - Who-ville hair or Daisy-Head Mayzie (something growing out of your head) - Remember that it's also Spring Picture Day.
Tuesday., March 2 -Wear red & white and a reading hat. It's Dr. Seuss's birthday!
Wednesday, March 3 - Foxy socks...for Fox in Sox
Thursday, March 4 - My Many Colored Days(clash colors) or Favorite book character
Friday, March 5 - Wakefield reader day - wear Wakefield clothes or colors
IditaREAD race begins March 1
Join in our reading race between elementary classes, beginning March 1. All students in grades K-6 can record (parents sign) how many minutes they read at home each night. Please read books at / about your reading level. Teachers will record these times and any classroom reading the next morning.
Each day, the library staff will move the team dog sleds down the elementary hallways, according to how many minutes (miles) read. There will be 24 checkpoints along the hallway, named after the actual checkpoints used in Alaska’s annual Iditarod race. Nome, the last stop, will be at the Library Media Center’s door.
The winning class team will receive frozen treats and will be pictured on the Wakefield web page. The last place team will receive the Red Lantern Award.
