First Grade Makes Oobleck
By Shelly Schultz

What is a solid when sitting on a plate and a liquid when in one’s hand? Can you guess? Ask any of Mrs. Schultz’s 1st graders and they will tell you Oobleck!! “What is Oobleck?” you might ask. The answer can be found in the Dr. Seuss book Bartholomew and the Oobleck.
Elementary students in Wakefield celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday with a week-long celebration. For the 1st graders, this celebration included reading various Dr. Seuss books and participating in activities to go along with the books we read. One such activity was investigating that mysterious stuff, Oobleck. The question to be solved was, “Is Oobleck a solid or a liquid?” Although there was some controversy between students on that one, we all agreed that playing with Oobleck was fun!
