We needed sugar to make it sweet.
Adding milk to the mix.
Add rock salt so the ice will melt. This has to happen for the milk to freeze.
Shake, shake, shake . . . and shake some more!
Putting the milk mixture into the bag with ice.
Removing the ice cream from the ice/salt bag.
Waiting patiently to find out if our ice cream is done!

First Graders Make Ice Cream!

by Cathy Hoffart

April 17, 2010

During the week of April 12-16th, two Wayne State College Clinical II students taught us about the four seasons.  Ms. Krier and Ms. Jansen are both seniors at Wayne State College majoring in Elementary Education.  As part of their degree they are required to teach a week-long, cross-curricular unit before they begin their student teaching next semester.  They did a great job of giving us new experiences including making homemade ice cream!  We learned that with a little milk, sugar, vanilla, ice, rock salt and two Ziploc baggies, we can make a tasty treat.  We shook the concoction until we thought our arms would fall off . . . then we shook some more!  When the milk began to harden, we enjoyed yummy, vanilla ice cream!  Thanks for Ms. Krier and Ms. Jansen for their hard work and giving us a week of fun learning!
