Science Fair and Civic Oration Contest
6th grade projects
by Matt Brenn
February 24, 2010
Mr. Brenn's sixth grade class is currently working on science fair projects. The students were divided into groups and then chose the project they would like to perform. The students are following the Scientific Method which includes: Question, Hypothesis, Procedures, Observations, and Conclusion. Some of the projects that are being done deal with density, volume, mold, heart rate, etc. Once the projects are completed the students will type their findings and glue them to their poster board that will be on display in the elementary.
Another project that the sixth grade will be working on is the Civic Oration that is sponsored by Modern Woodmen of America. For this project, students will follow the set topic: "If I were president". The subject matter of this speech should be the student's own thoughts and words. In the speech, the sixth graders will share how he or she envisions the opportunities and challenges of being president of the United States of America. Some of the rules that students must follow for the speech contest are that the speech must be 3-5 minutes long and no props, visuals, or costumes can be used during the delivery of his or her speech. The local speech competition will be held in Wakefield on April 15, 2010 at 1:00p.m.
