by Jolene Klein

March 11, 2010

Wakefield elementary students celebrated this year's Read Across America event, held during the first week of March in honor of Dr. Seuss, whose birthday was March 2.

Elementary students started the week with the "Reader's Promise," participated in dress-up days, ate a Seuss lunch and birthday cake, and enjoyed the visits of celebrity readers at the Library Media Center.

We'd like to thank all of our our celebrity readers who entertained the students with favorite Seuss books.  This year's readers were:  Rick Lamprecht, Jason Heitz,(two appearances), Sherri Lundahl, Shannon Dorcey, Cindy Christensen, Pam Dutcher, Jared Wulf, and Mike Pommer.

Thank you to all the students and staff who participated in the dress-up days.

Read Across America is sponsored  by the National Education Association and is held each year around March 2,  Dr. Seuss's birthday.  Theodor Seuss Geisel  wrote his first easy-to-read book, "The Cat in the Hat" using only 220 different words.  Dr. Seuss was the winner of the 1984 Pulitzer Prize, 3 Academy Awards, and was the author and illustrator of 44 children's books. His books have made reading fun for millions of young readers. He died in 1991.
