5th Grade Battle Champs get the win

1st Battle of the Books was an exciting match!!

March 26, 2013

The Wakefield Library hosted the 1st Wakefield Battle of the Books for grades 4-6 on Friday, March 22.  The final battle was between Mrs. Metzler's All Stars and Mrs. Garwood's Battle Champs.  The teams answered 32 questions in the final battle about the 10 books that the teams had read and prepared for battle.  The first part of the battle was answering "In Which Book" questions.  Students scored points for knowing the correct title and author of the book that the question was about.

The last part of the battle consisted of answering questions about the book, such as the name of a character, a place, or a significant item.  The teams were given the title of the book in which the question was about.

The Championship Battle of the Books was won by the 5th Grade Battle Champs, with the final score of 90-70 points.  The 4th grade All Stars earned 2nd place finish, after a perfect first round in the "In Which Book" section.

Mr. Galles's 6th grade Fantastic 14 team earned 3rd place, after their second round loss.  The first round of battles matched the two 6th grade sections, the two 5th grade classes, and the two 4th grade classes against each other.  The second round pitted the winner of the 5th grades classes against the winner of the 6th grades.  The 4th grade class had a 2nd round bye.

All students in grades 4-6 earned a Certificate of Participation and a Pizza Hut Book-it coupon.  The 3rd place finishes also received a candy bar.  The 2nd place finishers also earned a Subway coupon for a kid's meal.  The Champions each received a $10 gift card to Barnes & Noble book store.

We'd like to thank all the teachers & staff who helped make the Battle of the Books a success:

Mrs. Metzler, Mrs. Manz, Mrs. Garwood, and Mrs. Bodlak, who helped with  Mrs. Klein to read the books and write questions.  We'd like to give a BIG thanks to Mrs. Metzler, who helped prepare the students by reading about 4 of the books in Reading class.   Thanks also to library para Mrs. Hoffman, who helped get ready for the battle, as well as Mr. Wulf, Mr. Trenhaile, Mr. Hassler, Mr. Rex Hansen, Mr. Wendte, Mrs. VanderVeen (iPad photographer), Mrs. Chase (scorekeeper), Mrs. Bodlak (timer), and Mrs. Metzler (judge).  We appreciate all the assistance from the classroom teachers, student teachers, and paras, as well.

We'd like to congratulate all the students for their reading & hard work to prepare.  We think the real winners are those who keep reading!!

For those who are wondering, we plan to have next year's Battle book titles and the teams named before you leave for the summer.
