Land Surveying Presentation

September 21, 2013

On September 20, the sixth grade students at Wakefield Elementary listened to a presentation about land surveying.  Mr. Ryan Lorenzen presented information, facts, and his experiences with land surveying.  Mr. Lorenzen works for the Bureau of Land Management and has both federal and state surveying licenses.  Mr. Lorenzen has an office in Winnebago, Nebraska and is stationed out of an office in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

The sixth grade students learned that math is very important when it comes to being a surveyor.  Mr. Lorenzen has two college degrees that have assisted him in the career of surveying.  He holds a degree from the University of Minnesota-Mankato and Brainerd Area Vocational Technical Community College also in Minnesota.

There was a lot of valuable information that passed along to the sixth graders.  For instance, to do surveys like Mr. Lorenzen does they require 5 receivers to obtain data to determine boundaries and elevation.  Mr. Lorenzen showed the students an actual GPS receiver and mentioned that GPS has revolutionized surveying in terms of the measuring process.  When detecting boundaries, Mr. Lorenzen said he usually finds metal, stones, wood, and other items to mark corners.

Thank you Mr. Lorenzen for stopping in and sharing your knowledge with the sixth graders!
