Nutrition Students visit Human Performance Lab

"Keeping a Healthy Weight" at WSC

October 30, 2014

In relationship to our study of “Keeping a Healthy Weight” and the importance of physical fitness, the Nutrition class visited the Wayne State College Human Performance Lab, on Wednesday October 29th.   At Wayne State College students had the chance to participate in some of the testing.  Dylan Hurlbert and Kimberly Silvestre volunteered to do the underwater weighting for body fat percentage - they wore a swimsuit and were dunked in a tank of water to determine their body fat percentage - and measuring of residual lung volume. All students participated in the skinfold test (they measure the “pinch” of fat and skin on different areas of the body to come up with the body fat percentage) and bioelectrical impedance analysis (the student holds on to the machine and it sends a current through their body to measure percent- you can’t feel it at all).  After the performance testing the students were able to try different machines and Dr. Kris Fox explained the importance of staying active as well as discussing college majors/careers with the students.
