Get ready for the Battle of the Books 2015

1st round begins March 10

February 13, 2015

The students in Wakefield's 4th, 5th, and 6th grades are about to engage in battles of the reading kind.   Since the end of the last school year, students have been reading this year's selection of 10 intermediate level books to prepare.  They have read and discussed some of the books in Mrs. Metzler's reading class this school year.   The books used in the battles are from the Intermediate list of books nominated for Nebraska's children's choice award called the Golden Sower Award.

This year, the students have been divided into 13 teams, with 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students on every team.  We recently met to so each team could decide a team name and choose a spokesman for the battles.  They also drew a number for a spot on the 13-team bracket.  Three teams will have 1st round byes.  The first round begins in the library on March 10.  Click here for the brackets. (Parents will have to ask their children what their team is named.)

Battle rounds are won by knowing the correct title and author of the books for questions beginning with "In Which Book?" and for correctly answering questions about something contained in the story.    Teams are given time to discuss, but only the spokesman is allowed to provide the answer.  Teams have a chance to steal after an incorrect answer.  A time limit is given for discussion.

The final battle will take place in the gym on Thursday, March 26,  at approximately 2:30 p.m. , following the 2:00 p.m. Championship battle for the students in grades 1-3.

Good luck to all of the teams!!  Keep reading.
