Latino Leadership Symposium

7 Wakefield Students Attend

By Harding, Lori

November 19, 2015

The City Campus Union at UN-L was the location for the 2015 Latino Leadership Symposium hosted by UN-L on Wednesday, November 18. Seven Wakefield students had the opportunity to attend this educational and inspiring event. Beginning at 9:00 a.m., a welcome given by Raymond Ramirez, the Diversity and Community Outreach Manager of UN-L. The keynote speaker for the day was April Hernandez Castillo. April is an actor who has had roles in the movie Freedom Writers and in the television shows Law & Order and Dexter. April challenged students to believe that who they are matters. She encouraged students to guard their circle of influence, making sure that circle consists of people and things that lift them up rather than bring them down. Breakout sessions throughout the remainder of the day were led by UN-L staff and centered on positive ways to break negative stereotypes of the Latino population as portrayed in the media and how they, as students, can be a moving force in that change. Attending from Wakefield were seniors Kimberly Calderon, Yesenia Ibarra, Jennifer Lopez, Mayra Mena, Alejandra Orona, Tiffany Saquique, Brenda Vega, and school counselor, Mrs. Harding.
