Career Exploration Workshop

8th graders attend workshop Jan. 27

By Harding, Lori

January 30, 2017

The eighth grade class attended a Career Exploration Workshop at NECC on Friday, January

27. The day was very educational. Students learned more about how their interests can be a

part of their future careers. It was very interesting to view the results of the CAPS/COPS/

COPES tests all 8th graders took at school the first part of January. The break-out activities

were very fascinating. Exploring careers through the O*NET Online website opened students’

eyes to countless career opportunities. The budgeting activity opened their eyes to what the

“real world” could look like and helped them realize that spending habits need to be adjusted

according to income. Following the workshop, several NECC students took 8th graders on a

tour of the campus. The tour ended at the student cafeteria where students ate lunch. Students

enjoyed the time spent at NECC and are excited to visit their campus again.

Following time spent at NECC, students traveled to the Nucor Detailing Center in Norfolk.

Students broke up into 3 groups and toured their facility. At the conclusion of the tour, students

met as a large group and learned more about the careers available at Nucor. The information

given was very interesting. We learned that Nucor is ranked 26 th of all businesses as best

companies to work for! Those giving the tour gave students valuable information in seeking out

a career that best fits them and encouraged them to spend time shadowing careers of interest

before they go to college.

Overall, it was a very interesting, educational, and fun day! The testing, workshop, and industry

tour are activities 8th grade students participate in as part of the Career Development class

taught by Mrs. Harding, school counselor.
