8th Graders to Northeast Community College and Nucor

January 30, 2020

The eighth grade class attended a Career Exploration Workshop at Northeast Community College on Thursday, January 30. The day was very educational. Students learned more about how their interests can be a part of their future careers. It was very interesting to view the results of the CAPS/COPS/ COPES tests all 8th graders took at school the first part of January. The break-out activities were very fascinating. Exploring careers through the O*NET Online website opened students’ eyes to countless career opportunities. The budgeting activity helped students realize what the “real world” could look like and helped them understand that spending habits need to be adjusted according to income. Students greatly enjoyed the campus tour and were impressed with its size and modernity. They could picture themselves living in the dorms and eating at the cafeteria!!

Following time spent at NECC, students traveled to Nucor Detailing Center, also in Norfolk. Students learned about the many career opportunities found at Nucor, qualities they look for when hiring, and other interesting facts about the company. The day ended with Nucor staff facilitating the Marshmallow Challenge to students who were divided into groups of five. The 15-minute deadline proved to go by quickly! Students worked well together, did a great job, and enjoyed this activity. All students left with a souvenir Nucor sling bag! All in all, the day proved to be educational, interesting, and fun!
