Second Graders Learn about Balance and Motion.

by Katelyn Pommer and Solomon Peitz

March 13, 2009

Mr. Johnson's 2nd grade class learned about balance and motion.  Our first project was balance.  We first got cardboard, then we cut out our own shapes.  Next, we tried to balance them on a popsicle stick. The next thing we did was balance pencils on popsicle sticks.  After that, we tried to balance a pencil on top of another pencil.

After we finished that, we all had a chance to learn about spinners.  First, we learned about tops.  Then we added some weight.  The weight was a disc and the pole was a straw.  Next, we tried to spin a disc.  We got a piece of string and tried spinning the disc.  The next day we tried to spin a piece of paper with a straw.  The first thing we did was twirlers.  They were made of paper and one straw.  Our next thing was twirly birds.  They were also made of paper, but did not have a straw.  Instead we used paper clips.

Our last thing we did was use discs and straws to make wheels and axles.  The tricks we tried to do were wobble, turn, and see how we could make them go fast.

Students decide how to keep the marble moving and on the track.

The best thing we did was to roll a marble on a track, from one end of the room to the other.  It was fun learning about balance and motion!
