Services & Policies

Hours: 7:45 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., when school is in session.

Borrowing books: Books can be checked out for 2 weeks and renewed as needed. Renewals can be made without the book present. Overdue fines are charged to students in grades 7-12 and are accrued at a rate of 5 cents per day that the library is open. One day of grace is allowed past the due date. Students who accrue $1 or more (20+ days overdue) can not check out a book until the fine is paid.

Special Resources: Students have access to the online Library Catalog and to databases paid for by the LMC / Counseling department, including eLibrary, SIRS, and NCIS (Nebraska Career Information Service). The electronic encyclopedia Encarta is available on all school computers. Many helpful websites are bookmarked in the Media Center Links on the school webpage, including the databases on NebraskAccess, funded by the State of Nebraska for all state citizens. Logins and passwords are available from the Media Specialist. Students may use laptops from the wireless lab with permission, as class schedules permit, and must follow rules for the use of school computers. The LMC has a scanner and a color printer available for student use.

Inter-Library Loan (ILL): Students or teachers who are interested in reading books that are not in the Wakefield LMC collection, may request to borrow through the Interlibrary Loan system. Please ask the Media Specialist for assistance. Students are responsible to follow the ILL policies of the lending library.

Suggestions for the collection: Suggestions are welcome from students or teachers who would like to recommend titles or topics for the collection. Please give your suggestions to the Media Specialist.

DEAR Peer Book Reviews:  Students and teachers are invited to review or recommend books they have read for the school webpage.  Please ask at the library desk for more information.

Lost books: Please report missing books to the Library Media Center so steps can be taken to help locate the book. Students who have lost or damaged books must pay the replacement cost for the same book + processing materials for that book. If the book is found in good condition, the cost can be refunded.

Food & drink: Students may not eat snacks or drink in the library, except for water. Water bottles must be closed and may not be used by computers.

Leaving school (moving / summer break): All students who leave the school must return all library books and pay all fines & lost charges before they can be signed out by the Media Specialist.

Library Media Center (LMC) rules (reprinted from the Student Handbook):

1. The LMC is to be used for research or classroom work assigned by a teacher.

2. Instructors will limit the number of students coming to the LMC.

3. Students must have a pass stating the reason they are in the LMC. If a student is not working in the LMC, he/she will be sent back to class or study hall. [Students are also expected to sign in and out of the LMC.]

4. Students are expected to follow the media center rules. Students are expected to sit with no more than one other person at the table unless space prohibits.

5. Magazines and encyclopedias may not be checked out by students. Students may use the materials in the media center or have copies made of an article that they need to research. Cost is 10 cents per page.

6. Books are checked out for 2 weeks. A student may renew the book at that time. Students are responsible for fines on overdue material and lost or damaged books. Cost will be charged according to replacement value.

7. The LMC does not supply students with supplies, such as pens, paper, [highlighters, floppy disks], etc.

8. Any student may use Internet or the computers for research or school work. They may get on an account through the Media Specialist. Students abusing Internet or the computers will be asked to leave and will lose account privileges.
