NECC Hosts Latino Youth Summit 48 Wakefield Juniors and Seniors Attend The Lifelong Learning Center at Northeast Community College's campus was the host site for the 2024 Latino Youth Summit. The event began with a tour of NECC's campus and dorms. After a welcome was given by Northeast staff, the morning keynote presentation was given by Roger Garcia, the Associate Director for the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska at UNMC. He inspired students by sharing his life story. He also motivated them to break down barriers by being Latino leaders. The afternoon consisted of a panel discussion that included three NECC students and three successful Latino professionals from around the area. It allowed the high schoolers to ask questions about paying for college, determining their career path, and overcoming obstacles to succeed. Before the day ended, three Wakefield seniors won a drawing for a $1,000 scholarship to NECC. Congratulations to Jazmin Paredes, Stephanie Sarmiento, and Giovany Montoya! The Latino Summit was a great experience for all students.

We are excited to celebrate four amazing staff members, voted by our students in grades 7-12 for showcasing their unique strengths which were covered within the Positivity Project during the month of September. 👨‍🏫 Mr. Pieper, our Technology teacher, shines with open-mindedness every day in his classroom. He not only teaches but also learns from his students, showing them how much he cares. 🔬 Mrs. Virgil, our Science teacher, embodies curiosity, sparking excitement in her students with fun and engaging activities that make learning come alive! 🍽️ Mrs. Miner, our beloved Lunch Lady, greets every student with a smile and the strength of open-mindedness, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere in the lunchroom. 🌍 Mrs. Manz, our ELL Interventionist, displays outstanding teamwork by co-teaching and encouraging every student to achieve their best. 💼 Mrs. Hansen, our Business teacher, inspires through teamwork, partnering with local businesses, and giving her students real-world experiences, including helping with Homecoming and Prom! Ed Rising Teacher Spotlight by Gracyn Keagle

Each year, first graders are expected to master their knowledge of compound words!!! There is NO DOUBT they will remember as Compound Word Day definitely left an impression! Every hour or so another compound word snack was revealed and the excitement was contagious!!! We also dressed in as many compound words as we could think of (or find lying around the house!) Our teachers will put those pictures in a book we can enjoy all year long! What a memorable day it was!!! (Bonus? Flashlight is ALSO a compound word! Flashlight Friday is THE BEST!)
