Closing the Opportunity Gap Maria Gonzalez, a bilingual Northeast Community College representative, came to Wakefield Community Schools today to speak with 26 of our high school English Language Learners. Maria's presentation was completely in Spanish. She spent time debunking the myth that college is unaffordable or inaccessible for them. She told her story about overcoming obstacles to achieve her goal of furthering her education. She also talked about the many opportunities students have available to them, such as the dual credit courses that Wakefield Community Schools offers through NECC. Maria answered many of the students' college related questions and plans to return to Wakefield in the spring to discuss the process of applying to college and the programs offered at NECC. Several students stayed after Maria's presentation to converse with her individually. She was a great inspiration for the students.

Wakefield Community School's very own senior, Jocelyn Weaver, has been awarded the prestigious Regents Scholarship by the University of Omaha at Nebraska. Regents Scholarships are offered to residents of Nebraska that are graduating seniors of Nebraska high schools. Applicants with a minimum ACT composite of 30 and either a rank in the top 25% of their graduating class OR a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher qualify for the award. The Regents Scholarship covers undergraduate resident tuition for full-time students and is renewable with a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher. The award is renewable for up to four total years or until 120 attempted credit hours is reached or a bachelor's degree is earned. Jocelyn is incredibly involved at Wakefield Community Schools as she is the president of the National Honor Society, the president of Student Council, and the president of FBLA. As of right now, Jocelyn plans to earn her bachelor's degree in social work. Her goal is to pursue a career as a licensed social worker. There is no doubt that Jocelyn has a very bright future ahead of her.
