Five students from Wakefield Community Schools were selected to participate in the prestigious Northeast Community College Quiz Bowl which took place on March 29th. The students were Ryan Anderson (team captain), Jocelyn Weaver, Juan Paredes, Ashlyn Boeckenhauer, and Jeremiah Reimers. The Quiz Bowl was a single-elimination competition between two teams of four players, from the same Class C or Class D high school, enrolled in grades 9-12. 35 schools from the Northeast Nebraska area were represented. A plaque is given to the school winning the competition and medals are awarded to team members. Points were awarded for correct answers to questions taken from all areas of academic knowledge as well as current events. There appeared to be an emphasis on questions related to mathematics, sciences, history, and geography during this year's competition. In the first round, Wakefield competed and lost against Wausa. In the second/consolation round, Wakefield competed and won against Elgin. In the third round, Wakefield competed and lost against Howells-Dodge. It was a spirited contest amongst some of Northeast Nebraska's best and brightest students.

Maria Gonzalez, a bilingual Northeast Community College representative, came back to Wakefield Community Schools on Thursday to speak with 30 of our high school English Language Learners. She visited Wakefield last semester to motivate students to further their education after high school and she debunked the myth that college was unaffordable or inaccessible for them. This time she focused on informing students on how they can pay for college and ways to make it affordable, such as applying for scholarships, participating in work-studies, etc. Both of Maria's presentations were completely in Spanish. She was a great inspiration for the students.

NECC Scholastic Contest
On Wednesday, March 22, 21 Wakefield high schoolers participated in the prestigious Northeast Nebraska Scholastic Contest which included hundreds of other students from surrounding Class C and Class D schools. The 21 Wakefield students tested in 29 different subject areas ranging from topics related to the sciences, mathematics, history, english, welding, construction, wellness, etc. The 21 students were selected by their teachers to participate in this competition based on their advanced knowledge within their respective subjects; it is an honor simply to be selected to participate. The students who participated in the event were: Ryan Anderson, Gabriela Arriaza, Ashlyn Boeckenhauer, Katie Borg, Madison Borg, Kolton Fischer, Mayton Garcia-Juarez, Cade Johnson, Bailey Kai, Sierra Kaufman, Andrea Lopez, Tryden Meek, Megan Meyer, Jackson Pommer, Jazmin Paredes, Jeremiah Reimers, Diego Ruvalcaba, Ashlyn Vazquez-Catalan, Megan Walsh, Alexia Weaver, and Jocelyn Weaver. When students were not testing, they were able to enjoy a movie, games, snacks, and even karaoke. After lunch at Northeast Community College's cafeteria the results were announced at the award ceremony. Three Wakefield students earned awards. Jackson Pommer was awarded 2nd place for the Public Speaking examination and 3rd place for the American History examination. Jeremiah Reimers was awarded 2nd place for the Technical Mathematics examination. Ashlyn Vazquez-Catalan was awarded 2nd place for the Parenting and Child Development examination. It was a great day with some of Wakefield Community Schools' best and brightest students.
