Apply2College Event at WCS
On October 23rd, Wakefield Community Schools hosted the Apply2College Event sponsored by the EducationQuest Foundation. The purpose of the event was to encourage students to pursue post-secondary education. During the first and second periods on Monday, 26 seniors dedicated their time to applying to colleges in the Wakefield Achievement Center. The two most popular colleges that the students in the senior class applied to were Northeast Community College and Wayne State College. The University of Nebraska at Omaha and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln were the runner ups. The senior class applied to 12 different colleges. Seniors took advantage of the current application fee waivers for UNL, UNO, and UNK as it typically costs around $45 just to apply to those colleges. Students who plan to work after graduating spent this time updating their resumes for job applications. Students were encouraged to apply to at least three colleges and had the opportunity to ask any questions they had related to the process of applying to a college. Seniors were given college merchandise prizes for participating in the event. By the end of the event, a total of 74 college applications were completed.

The two high school general music classes took a field trip to the National Music Museum in Vermillion, SD on Friday, October 20th. They were able to see many different types of instruments from a variety of countries during their visit. Students had a chance to view guitars played by Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, and Elvis! Amongst their collection, the NMM also houses two priceless violins made by Amati and Stradivarius, on display in the new wing of the recently renovated building. A big thank you to Ana Sofia Silva, one of the curators at the museum, for her educational tour of the different galleries.
